The technical assistance for the project is being available upon request, and NSC is working with partnering organizations and the community to meet the needs for technical assistance. NSC is looking to extend the project services, however, please note that the project is getting to its end by the end of the month of June 2006. Also, please have a look at the pictures of events held on the blog.

We would like to make an announcement that NSC together with IRC project SOAR and Turkish American Multicultural Family Services is holding a workshop provided by project that will address the conflict issues within the community, leadership building, issues of cultural preservation, negotiation, building the self-help structure within the Meskhetian Turkish community in greater Philadelphia and Lancaster area. The workshop is going to be held on July 22nd, the place and exact times will be reported once the logistics and agenda are confirmed. We are hoping to get leaders as well as potential leaders of the community together for a day of discussion about the community leadership trends, acquiring negotiation skills and talking about self-help and cultural preservation. Women and young people who are involved in the community are encouraged to attend. We are hoping to get a diverse group of people from the community who could play roles of leaders in the community. Please contact Leyla Dursunova at (215) 893-8400 for more information, or if any member of the community you are working with is interested in attending, they would need to RSVP in advance. The community leader, Mikael Latipov, arrived to Philadelphia from Krasnodar recently, who was an organizer of the hunger strike in 2002 together with human rights activists that caught attention of the international community. We are excited to have Mr. Latipov on board with the project. We appreciate the opportunity of having project SOAR's input into the project and value the established collaboration between the two agencies and we are looking forward to continue accessing the resources and assistance provided by IRC.

NSC project coordinator went to Vermont in order to provide technical assitance to the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program there. On the 29th of March the coordinator met with staff and service providers (health, education, social serivces) working with the Meskhetian Turkish population. The presentation included the cultural and historical background of the refugee population, lessons learned from the resettlement program in Philadelphia, informational session on NSC’s community building efforts, as well as questions and answers. On the 30th of March the project coordinator will meet with the ethnic community in Vermont for a questions and answers session, as well as together with the staff to identify most pressing needs of the community. The general information about the resettlement program in the U.S. and about issues that were of an interest to the community were discussed, as well as resettlement experiences and stories of Meskhetians in Philadelphia were shared with the community.

ORR regional workshop
The NSC coordinator and Director of Social Services department attended a workshop organized by ORR by the IRC’s project SOAR. The valuable information on the work and issues of ethnic CBOs, leadership trends within ethnic communities, and community building and development was gathered at the conference, and it also offered a great opportunity to network with the ethnic CBOs nationwide and learn from their experiences.

On May 27th NSC together with Turkish American Multicultural Family Services organized the financial literacy and home ownership workshop for community in Lancaster. The training focused on building credit history strategies as well as home ownership. The workshop was conducted in Turkish by volunteer professionals in the field, thanks to the Turkish American Multicultural Family Services. We also value and acknowledge great collaborative efforts from Lutheran Children and Family Services and Church World Services offices in Lancaster for all their support in putting a workshop together and outreaching to the community.

Please check out the pictures from the trip to Please Touch museum, World Refugee Day dance by the Ahiska Turkish dancing group organized by Nargiza Karimova, as well as pictures from the picnic on June 17th.

The photo documentary project was introduced to the youth at the picnic where they were asked to document their lives in the U.S. using photography. The photos will be developed and posted on the web log.

Please contact us with any question or concerns.

Picnic pictures, June 17th

<img style="FLOAT: left; Please find below the list of activities held during the past two months, as well as activities planned. Thank you.
On December 30th NSC held the New Year’s celebration evening for the Meskhetian Turkish community. It was a great gathering of the community with ethnic food, live ethnic music (from Lancaster, PA), dancing, games, and prizes. It was a great family fun, and people had a chance to enjoy the celebration among the community. People arrived from Northeast Philadelphia, Broomall, Upper Darby, and Lancaster. You can look at pictures on our weblog: www.ahiskaturks.blogspot.com. Some important issues about community organizing were raised, like unification and not the division of the Meskhetian Turkish community should be happening and few of the guests from the community spoke about the future hopes in the United States.
On Januray the 8th we held the financial education and home ownership workshop conducted in Turkish by two professionals at NSC. They were speaking about the importance and ways of keeping up good credit history and how this plays out in the future. Participants were able to ask questions about home ownership and mortgage, credit history and credit score.
We continue to get inquiries about the adjustment of status application process. Information about the adjustment of status is available in Russian and is mailed out upon request to the families.
We are planning a Citizenship workshop combined with the celebration of the International Women’s Day (March 8th) on the 11th of March, at NSC. The workshop will talk about the benefits, requirements and the process of obtaining the U.S. citizenship. It will also talk about the process of adjustment of status that many in the community are facing now. The workshop will be done in a very interactive and playful way by NSC’s Americorps VISTA volunteer, Kristina Koenig. The celebration after the workshop will be dedicated to the International Women’s Day that is celebrated by the community, and will have games, charades, dances, and hopefully some great ethnic food. The flyer in Russian for the event is attached.
On March 18th we’re planning to conduct a financial education/homeownership workshop for the community in Lancaster. The workshop will be similar to the one conducted in Philadelphia and will be conducted by the same Turkish speaking professionals.
We are receiving requests for technical assistance from the agencies, and the interagency collaboration is working great. NSC project coordinator is receiving a number of calls from agencies, volunteers and members of the ethnic community in different states with requests for information and various forms of assistance. Project coordinator is planning a trip to another resettlement site for Meskhetian Turks in Vermont in order to provide technical assistance to the agency and ethnic community there.
NSC is working with IRC, New York in obtaining the technical assistance on the project’s leadership development part and the collaboration’s been working great.
For the school spring break we’re planning to have the teen youth outing to Lancaster, children’s trip to “Please Touch” museum, and a community picnic.
The idea about obtaining marriage licenses has proved to be hard to logistically arrange with working families, however, we’re keeping the invitation open for assisting available couples in obtaining their marriage licenses in the future.
As always please feel free to share this information with anyone who you think would be interested, and please get back to us with your questions or comments.
Thank you.
Leyla Dursunova

First pictures

<img style="FLOAT: left; Please find below the list of the activities held during the past two months, as well as activities planned. Thank you.

Meskhetian Turkish Community Building Collaborative Project is wishing you all a happy holiday season and all the best wishes in the New Year!

October 30th
Apple-picking trip to the farm
12 children and 10 adults from Meskhetian Turkish families joined the trip to the Snipes farm in Morrisville. Exciting trip in the eve of Halloween was a great fun adventure for children and for adults. There was apple and pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn maze, and a feast with pumpkin pies and apple cider afterwards on that beautiful fall day. You can find pictures from the event on www.ahiskaturks.blogspot.com. We had families from Chester, Philadelphia, Upper Darby present at the outing.

November 3rd
Eid celebration
The end of the holy month of Ramadan celebration was held by NSC at the Foundation for Islamic Education in Villanova. Families from Philadelphia, Chester Hill, Upper Darby, Lancaster, and Villanova were joined the gathering together with NSC staff. Traditional food was brought by the invitees and people were able to share the fun with their community. The celebration was a fun event where people of different ages in the community had a chance to interact with each other, play musical chairs, dance, and celebrate the end of the Ramadan, fist for most of them in the United States. You can find pictures from the event on www.ahiskaturks.blogspot.com. Each family left with a bunch of financial literacy brochures from Fanny Mae foundation in Russian on the following topics ” Borrowing Basics”, “Knowing and Understanding Your Credit”, “Opening a Door to a Home of Your Own”, and “Choosing the Mortgage That’s Right for You”.

Change of status application process
Many of the families are not yet ready to apply for their change of status or are being referred to other resources. So far NSC is working with 3 families processing their LPR applications. As soon as we have later arrived families ready to apply, the process will continue with those. The fees for the MT LPR applications are: $250 per person, however, households with more that 3 people do not pay the amount exceeding $750. Seniors are going to be processed pro bono.

Obtaining marriage licenses
The first family will be taken to the Philadelphia City Hall to apply for a marriage license last week of December. The process is going to be given the priority in the months of January and February, and the couples would gather for the celebration of their marriages possibly around the 8th of March – International Women’s Day. However, the date selected is very flexible and might be changed since it’s the event that is more important for the families. We are planning to work with the Foundation for Islamic Education, and Dr. Mustafa, who is able to register couples in the state of Pennsylvania, and agreed to assist the project in this matter. We will also be working closely with volunteers, churches and relatives of the young couples to make sure that community is aware of the process of obtaining marriage licenses and certificates for the future arrivals.

Collaboration with JEVS
NSC coordinator met staff of Jewish Employment and Vocational Services to introduce the project, since many Meskhetian Turkish families are being provided employment services by the organization. The possibilities of the project assisting the work of employment counselors through technical assistance were discussed.

Financial Literacy Workshop
NSC together with students from Wharton Business School of University of Pennsylvania conducted a financial literacy workshop in Russian that included the basics of banking, managing the credit history, family budgeting and money spending. We are planning to continue working with the families in the area on the issues of financial literacy since it seems to be one of the main concerns for them.

As always please feel free to share this information with anyone who you think would be interested, and please get back to us with your questions or comments.

Thank you.

Leyla

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leyla N. The meeting was hosted at NSC’s office and there were 28 people present at the meeting. Savas Can and Leyla Dursunova were facilitating the meeting. The issues discussed were some of the following:

- The introduction to the project, it’s goals, activities, objectives
- The creation of the self help organization: how it works, what it is, and the possible way for the community to do it
The large part of the discussion consisted of the in-community brain storming about the leadership part. The issues with the current, so-called leadership were raised from the discussion and it was obvious that there are quite a few disagreements on the current way things are organized. Lancaster representatives had a clear idea and vision about what the leadership should be like, what it should be doing and how it should operate in the current flow of things. The biggest part of the refugee resettlement is concentrated in the North East Philadelphia area and the opinions on the leadership roles and functions were different within the group.

We hope to be able to openly discuss the rest of the issues on the next meeting in August.

Youth activities
NSC organized youth picnic on July 3rd and group youth outing on July 4th to the art museum area for Independence Day festivities and celebration.

27 Meskhetian Turkish teenagers (from North east Philadelphia, Telford, and Springfield, MA), children and young adults gathered at the picnic at Penny pack Park in North East Philadelphia. Various activities and games were provided and organized by NSC’s project coordinator and volunteers. The picnic was aimed to foster the interaction between the children.

On July 4th, 10 MT teenagers together were introduced to their first 4th of July celebration around Art Museum in Philadelphia. It was their first introduction to the Independence Day in the United States and the history of the holiday was beautifully told by NSC’s volunteer. The activity was aimed to share the American Holiday experience and foster civic participation mentality in youth.

Plans for the upcoming month

July 27th: Seniors trip to the NSC’s Senior Center
July 27th: Trip to the gardening store for elders to choose the plants they would like to grow as part of the gardening activity for elders
July 27: Women’s group gathering in North East Philadelphia: the issues like assisting new families in their new life, organizing employment preparedness workshop, social adjustment issues for refugees and families, creating a women’s committee group
By July 30: Distribution of the need assessment survey in Russian to all MT families. The results of the survey will provide information on the topics of interests for organizing workshops, training sessions for MT families.
By July 30: Together with the survey NSC will mail out the translated into Russian requirements to file for Legal Permanent Residency for the families that arrived to the U.S. during summer 2004
August 4th: Children’s trip to Art Museum, includes a 1 hour architecture workshop, for children ages 6-12 years old (please let us know if you have any MT children in mind for this)
August 4th: Art Museum trip will be followed by a trip to a Public Library

Other upcoming events:
NSC plans to organize the financial literacy workshop, initially for the group in Lancaster, using an experienced volunteer in the area of finance with the experience of providing similar training to refugees resettled by IRC, NY. The successful implementation would lead to the expanding the workshop to other areas of Meskhetian Turkish resettlement.

August gathering to follow up on the community leadership development

In September, NSC is planning to organize a “group wedding” for young MT families that were not able to get officially married in Russia but are willing to legalize their relationships in the U.S..

Adjustment of Status workshop is planned for early fall 2005

Introdiction to the Project

September 5, 2005

To Whom It May Concern:
We are pleased to inform you that the Nationalities Services Center has received a grant from Office of Refugee Resettlement to launch the Meskhetian Turk Social Adjustment and Community Building Collaborative Project.
NSC plans to support and encourage development of the existing ethnic community leadership in hopes of creating an ethnic community based organization.
